Historical Charm, Modern Elegance.
About Your Host
Welcome to Mathern Palace Estate, a truly unique and special place to escape, steeped in history and charm.
I’m Charlotte, and in 2022 I began my journey as a first-time host of our luxury holiday cottages. We started with two cottages and added The Gatehouse to our portfolio in 2024. Overseeing the renovation of the cottage was a complete joy; every detail was considered and chosen to ensure our guests have the most special experience.
It has been my joy to welcome so many wonderful guests who have passed through our doors. Whether you’re here to explore the beautiful walking trails and surrounding countryside, celebrate a wedding, or visit family, we strive to offer tranquility and peace, combined with a touch of luxury to suit every guest.
I’m delighted you’re considering staying with us and experiencing a touch of the Palace Magic. You’ll likely find me and my cockapoo pottering around, if you do, please say hi!
About Mathern Palace
Mathern Palace, located near Chepstow, is a historic Grade I listed building dating mainly from the 15th century. The site holds historical significance tied to King Tewdrig (also known as Twerdic), a 7th-century king of Gwent and Glywysing. According to tradition, King Tewdrig was wounded in battle against the Saxons and died at Mathern. In memory of him, the nearby St. Tewdric’s Church was established on the spot where he died, marking the area's early medieval importance.
The palace itself became the main residence of the Bishops of Llandaff from 1408 until 1705. It survived periods of disrepair and rebuilding over the centuries. In the late 19th century, the palace and its gardens were transformed by Henry Avray Tipping, an architectural writer and garden designer, most notably the Interiors and Garden Editor for Country Life Magazine. Tipping purchased the estate in 1894 and undertook extensive renovations and garden landscaping in the Arts and Crafts style, restoring much of the palace’s former charm.
Since then, Mathern Palace has passed through various owners and uses, including housing refugees during World War I and serving as a guest house in the mid-20th century. Today, it remains a private residence, and welcomes you to enjoy it’s rich history and three holiday cottages. A place of history, calm and tranquility.
